To Stay In The Residence
Of The Future,
As If You Lived There
There are many issues that we must deal with to realize a comfortable residential climate while only using the resources in the area to the amount that allows its regeneration. In 2011, the LIXIL Housing Foundation (now called Jyukankyo Foundation) opened the “Memu Meadows”, an experimental residential facility in the cold climate that is environmentally conscious, in the rich land where memories of being a farm remains and where one can feel the breath of life from the fertile land. The guest rooms at “Memu Earth Hotel” vary from the “Meme”, a prototype of the experimental residence project by the architect Kengo Kuma, to the winners of the “International University Architecture Competition” such as Harvard University and The Oslo School of Architecture and Design, which he is also a chief judge of. “Studio Memu”, which serves as the hotel reception and restaurant, is a precious building where a pasture warehouse over 40 years old was renovated by the architect Toyo Ito. In the spacious room where a fireplace that reminds one of the past sits at the center, art pieces and furniture made by creators connected to Hokkaido are displayed. Items by local artists and original merchandise collaborating with Japanese brands are also on sale.

Using the traditional residence of Hokkaido as a motif, this is an experimental residence that uses the same coating material for the walls and roof, that seems to float over the green land. The white coating material that lets through light, has a double skin structure, that allows a bright and soft light into the room in the cold region where life can tend to be insular. In the winter, it can take in geothermal heat in between the coating through the thermal floor heating system. This not only increases the insulation function, but is an advanced function can efficiently heat up the room from the radiant heat of the fireplace and chimney. Inside the room are multiple sensors that automatically measure the data of the change in thermal environment such as the thermal load from CO2 emission. It also measures earthquake data, and can stock and collect data for a long period of time, serving the role as a laboratory.

With the theme of “RETREAT IN NATURE”, it represents the conversation created between the living space and the pastural scenery. The interior undulation defined by the single connection of the base and roof parts, provides a 360°natural panoramic view for the resident and the seasonal changes shown through it. It is designed to reduce the amount of energy consumption from the construction material, and not only does it have a sustainable design with the raised floor in consideration of the snowfall, it emits less carbon dioxide in the formation, transport and construction process. It also uses timber produced in the local area and limits the use of concrete, in order to contribute to the local economy. It is also designed to be taken apart easily, with the intention of re-use in the future.

This is a house that has floors with different heights and a roof with different angles, which adjusts the environment and allows the resident to feel the changes in season. The crossing two walls that is the main part of the structure creates 4 spaces of differing qualities, and life activities such as cooking, eating, bathing and sleeping etc., are conducted outside. The room inside is created as a place to escape from unexpected bad weather. The 4 spaces are; the “Garden Room” which becomes the garden that gathers the snow in winter; the “Outside Living Room”, which is the main room; the “Room for Cooking” that is protected from the strong winds by the steep roof; and the “Inside Room”, which is the most protected from the outside environment. They all have different qualities depending on the season.

Inheriting the memories and culture of being a farm, the “barn house” aims to present a new way of co-existence between horse and human. The building has segments for residential space and the sheds for the horses and is designed to optimize the thermal environment for humans and horses. The horse manure is not only used as compost but also used to warm up the room using the heat from the compost process. The charcoal that lines the walls absorbs the ammonia from the horses and the charcoal that cannot absorb the ammonia anymore is used as compost after it is used as a source of heat. The absorption rate of the solar heat and the insulation function naturally changes with the amount of charcoal in the walls. It’s an experimental residence filled with the unique attempt to suggest a new relationship between human, animal and building.

This Machi Mato House won the grand prize for the “1st annual residence design competition for students” in 2011, which was held with the theme to design “a new type of home suitable for the new era after the disaster”. Can something richer be obtained from what we have now? From that question, they focused on the “pasture” that symbolizes Taiki Town. They not only use the pasture for the exterior wall, but the dried pasture preserved in sealed cases at the time of reaping also becomes the wall by being stacked along the shelves on the inside. The dried pasture also becomes the thermal insulation by having its moisture transpire. It is used to warm the room in the winter through fermentation heat. It is a one-storied house that blends in with the local community, with hidden ambitious endeavors.
